10 Hour Rule

In my Air Products days, I had projects in such garden spots as Dothan, AL, Parkersburg, WV, and East St Louis, IL. The first step in getting there was an early morning flight from ABE to Atlanta…

Something About Making an Entrance

Week 16 of the photo-a-day challenge, noticing a pattern in my collecting

This week as I was going around gathering up the never-ending pile of leaves from the trees surrounding my home, I noticed many things I usually walk past when my garden is in full bloom. For instance how I appear to have this urge to collect old doors and reuse them. It’s partly because of the look but also the history. Who walked through them before me? What stories could be told about those homes? What joy and sadness came through them?

My husband brought me the doors above that came from an old house in Massachusetts that his parents bought. They were ancient manual opening garage doors just laying around, and he thought they would be something I would like. We hung them in our side yard and put them in front of my compost pile. It’s my little secret.

We found this screen door on a trip back from North Carolina shortly after visiting when my mother passed away. We bought it to use for a basement door, but it didn’t fit when we got it home. So I talked my husband into making me a small garden tool shed and using it for that. I kept the M to remind me of my Mom; she loved gardening too.

I wrote about my fabulous greenhouse recently that we built during a vacation break. We used a reused old door for it as well that we found at a Habitat for Humanity store in Atlanta, and the panes over the door are a reused traditional door sidelight mounted on its side.
