Are School Sports Still Fun?

Have you ever been interested in playing a sport here at Eastside, but couldn’t motivate yourself to participate? Have you wanted to play a sport that wasn’t offered at Eastside? Many students lack the motivation to play sports at school or in their own time. Others play sports outside of school but quit at a young age.

This aversion to sports has contributed to the physical inactivity epidemic that has been plaguing our country, resulting in a three-decade-long trend toward obesity. Currently, one out of every ten American children is obese. Sports could be an enjoyable exercise for kids to stay healthy, but why aren’t they playing them? And is there anything the school can do to increase the number of student-athletes?

Sports should be fun for students but many just don’t find it fun anymore. One reason for this lack of interest is the focus on competition rather than enjoyment. Many coaches or competitive leagues push the kids too hard to win, instead of focusing on having fun. This can lead to the kid feeling discouraged if they can’t meet the expectations of their coach, turning the sport into more work than play for the kid.

Another factor can be peer pressure or poor role-modeling. To be committed to a sport and enjoy it, you need to be ready for all of the factors that come with the sport, such as working with your team and the necessary social interactions that come along with that. This can be a challenge for some kids because of social anxiety or low self-confidence.

Varsity soccer player Jasmine Quiros says, “Some students are interested in playing sports but are afraid of being judged based on their performance or what other people will think of them.”

If kids find themselves having low motivation and time constraints, then they will stop playing. Schools have tried to bypass this problem by offering a wider variety of sports, but it’s just not working.

“I don’t think a wider variety of sports would change my opinion,” says sophomore Elijah Songer. “It’s just my lack of motivation that makes it hard for me to want to participate.”

So if you aren’t playing sports, what else can you do stay active? There are lots of options. Try walking to your destination instead of driving or go to the park with your friends. These activities can incorporate exercise into your lifestyle even if it’s only for an hour. Anything that gets your heart pumping and your adrenaline going will help keep you healthy. Even if you don’t want to play sports, small changes to your daily routine can have a big impact on your health and well-being. They might even be fun.
