Have you ever wondered why your pets are so enthralled with sniffing and smelling? You’re walking your dog and the next thing you know he’s wallowing around ecstatically in another dog’s poo.

Or you might be amused or even put off by your cat’s insistence on planting his nose up the butt of his cat friends.

Although smell is important to us humans, it’s not as critical as it is for our canine and feline pals. Cats and dogs — and other creatures — live in a world of scents.

Additionally, he says, a cat’s visual acuity is ten times less than ours, making their sense of smell — not vision — their primary means of identifying fellow cats, individuals and other objects in their environment.

In a world dominated by odors, cats use their smell receptors to sniff out friends, enemies, food, possible mates, and their own previously marked territory.

When you see your cat repeatedly scratch on a particular surface — like your unfortunate sofa — they’re not just sharpening their claws or trying to annoy you.

They’re leaving their scent — which is like a local newspaper for other cats.
