Fire of Hope

Would you do something
for the weary traveller
trudging —
head down —
up the shadow-shrouded hill?

Light a few —
no, thousands of —
red paper lanterns
with gold trimmings
along the meandering trail:
exhort him to keep his eyes
fixed upon the little flickering flame,
every step of the way.

If he sees the flickering fire of despair
devouring the paper lanterns which encase it,
an apocalyptic forest fire
will break out,
just as he thought.

But if he sees the flickering fire of hope
fuelling the beauty of the paper lanterns
as a good-fortuned orb,
