Mushroom Leather Can Change the Fashion Industry Completely

It is more than just a cool innovation

The leather situation in fashion is quite struggling. While genuine leather raises ethical and environmental issues; fake leather varieties often cause negative impacts on the environment, too. Moreover, there is the question of durability.

The alternatives to real leather usually lack certain characteristics and fail to solve the unethical situation. At least, that has been the case for quite some time. Soon though, the fashion game can completely change because mushroom leather is about to promise us a better future.

For hundreds of years, real leather has been produced and continuously used in fashion products. Bags or shoes made of 100% genuine leather has been reaching millions of people for various reasons. Leather has always been closely linked to durability, strength, and elegance.

But, there is a huge problem. Genuine leather means torturing animals and polluting the air in vast amounts. The production process involves animal tanning. It is simply painful and highly toxic. It also takes hundreds of years to degrade.

As environmental concerns drive sustainable changes in the fashion industry, a lot of effort is put into replacing genuine leather. From the start, it is for a good cause. It begins at a point of consideration for animal welfare. And, that’s great on its own. However, it does not end where it begins.

Such alternatives are usually marketed as vegan. That is not a lie at all; fake leather means truly no animal cruelty. But, it usually entails some cruelty to the environment.

The real truth is that vegan leather generally refers to PU aka polyurethane. It is simply a synthetic material that is not biodegradable. A bag made of PU remains on earth forever and causes carbon emission at an extreme level. And, of course, this is a serious lowlight.

Additionally, PU looks synthetic and fake — well, as it is. But, who wants to carry a backpack or wear shoes that scream synthetic? You don’t even have to care about…
