Our Often Forgotten Essential Workers

In addition to the scores of brave healthcare workers and first responders on the frontlines of this pandemic, let’s not forget the following.

While many of us are stuck in our homes, migrant farm workers, truck drivers, grocery store workers and fast food workers are still working so we can eat.

Essential retail workers at hardware stores, big box retailers and pet stores are still working so we can buy tools, clothes, pet food and other things we need to survive.

Garbage collectors and utility workers are still working to keep our lights, heat, water, waste management and internet going.

Postal workers, couriers and gig workers are still working to deliver our daily necessities and packages from friends and family.

Gas station attendants and bus drivers are still working to ensure that all these essential workers can get to where they need to go.

Without these people our civilized society would descend into chaos and madness.

Yet, many of them get paid minimum wage, which at the federal level is only $7.25 an hour.

I hope that when we come out of this, we can all recognize our own sense of self-preservation, classism, racism, judgement and greed and do a better job of keeping them in check. We’re all guilty in some way or another. If there is one gift this pandemic could possibly offer, let it be that those of us who survive, will come out of it as better human beings.
