The Secret to Getting What You Want

It’s not as hard as you think.

I used to think that there was some secret recipe for getting what you wanted in life. This elusive recipe was hidden deep within a padlocked cookbook, locked away in the vault of every rich and successful person that ever existed.

Greedy and cruel, this coven of successful people had made a secret pact centuries ago never to share their recipe with the rest of us; the poor, struggling masses. They sat up in their ivory towers and laughed and laughed, twirling their fine tipped mustaches as they laughed manically.

It wasn’t a pretty picture.

It also wasn’t true.

Instead, my mind had conjured up the image of manic evil geniuses in an attempt to make me feel better about myself. These people were evil and I was not. You didn’t want to be like them anyway. Good people, people like you, well, they’re always struggling. They never really get what they want. They’re just destined to be miserable forever.

Also not true.

I know and acknowledge that there’s plenty of privilege in this world. Some people were just lucky enough to be born with money and power or opportunity and it has catapulted them light years ahead of me in their own journeys.

Because of this money and power and opportunity life is just easy for them. People and jobs are drawn to them, orbiting their little worlds like the moon does our Sun. They were set up for success early, they never had to struggle because they were already half way around the track when I was just getting started.

Objectively, I know this isn’t fair and that it’s probably not realistic for me to ever catch up with them. I’ll never be independently wealthy. I’ll never run a Fortune 500 company. I’ll probably never see a million dollars in my lifetime.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t get what I want.

I realized that on top of all this privilege, all the wealth and power and opportunity being thrown at the feet of the lucky few, that there had to be some other secret, an ingredient to the recipe that I was just missing and that they happened to have plenty of in their cupboards.
