Design Thinking Stages

Design thinking is a human-centered approach that integrates design, social science, engineering and business expertise. According to Plattner, design thinking is an approach to solve a problem creatively which creates a human-centered product with innovation.

In the concept of design thinking there are several step models that proposed by IDEO Toolkit, Brown Researcher (IDEO), D.School (HPI) and d.school Bootcamp Bootleg. However, this article will only describe the stages that proposed by HPI.

Empathy is the fundamental of human-centered design process. The implementation of empathy must be carried out by applying the following 3 things. First, observe what users are doing and how they interact with their environment to understand their problem. Second, engage with users directly will help to know the ways of users thinking and values they hold. Third is to immerse yourself in the user experience to find out what the user feels.

Determine the actual user problems by focusing on specific user needs. This can be done to take a closer look to find out what the users really need.

Provide ideas that can be the solution to the problem. The ideas must be creative and not limited to creating better solution. In this stage, it is important to not limiting the ideas creation to provide unexpected or crazy solutions.

Applying ideas from the previous stage into physical form to create it more visual. The benefits of prototyping are to visualize the ideas and develop them. Users can also see, touch or even interact with the prototype. The user often only defines what their problem in general without mentioning in detail what outputs are needed. To be able to equalize the views between users and developers, a prototype needed that can lead to good cooperation between users and developers.

Test stages are the stages to improve solutions and make better a products. This stage can be done repeatedly until the best results are obtained. This stage is very important to improve prototypes and solutions, learn more about users, and correct the problems.
